Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state early analysis suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior political figure commented the attack left him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in five years prior.
